Sabo's Bakery

1851 South Broad Street

Sabo's Bakery occupied this building during the first half of the 20th century.  There have been architectural changes over the years.  Ruth tells us - Sabo's was located in a house with a storefront.  The store was small and the choice of baked items was not extensive.  They specialized in a few items that were displayed on doilies, not trays, in one long showcase.  Stephen Sabo passed away in 1957 at age 74.

1947: Parklyn Beauty Salon

Trenton Evening Times, August 12, 1947

This salon was located next to Tilton's Bakery.  A picture of the property as it exists today would show a bland front devoid of windows and not the architectural uniqueness of the windows in the Tilton's and salon storefronts as they originally existed.

1940: South Broad Street from Sewell Avenue

This exquisite photograph from the Hamilton Township Public Library Local History Collection depicts the view of South Broad Street , southbound lane, at Sewell Avenue, circa 1940.   Remember to right click and open  in a new window for a better view.  Previously remembered businesses Heintz Jewelers and Orland's Tailoring can be seen after the lone automobile pictured on the left.   The street meting Broad under the  billboard is Lily Street.  The corner store where the three men are standing was later Sam's Liquors with Azzaro's Tomato Pies next door.  Further down can be seen the Park 5c & 10c Store. A 2012 photograph of the same stretch can be seen below.

Nuncy Russo's Beer Garden

Trenton Evening Times, April 4, 1934

Although it is known that this building once housed a tavern, this is the first advertisement found indicating it was a beer garden.  The R&H Brewing Company operated in the Stapleton neighborhood on Staten Island.  R&H switched to near-beer during Prohibition  before going back to regular beer in the 1930s.  R&H was bought out by Piels Beer in 1953.  Piels closed the R&H plant and the brand entirely a year later.

South Broad Street Toy Store

Received an inquiry from Cathy Jacobs regarding the name of a toy store on South Broad Street between Annabelle Avenue and New Cedar Lane in the 1950s and 1960s.  The name of the store escapes Cathy and myself.  Does anyone remember the name of this toy store?

1901: Saratoga Chips

Trenton Evening Times, January 12, 1901

The potato chip originated at Moon's Lake House, a hotel in Saratoga Springs NY in 1853.  They were served to diners and guests who loved them.  First known as Saratoga Chips, their popularity spread throughout the country and were served with meals as a vegetable.  They didn't become a snack food until 1925.  Pearson Cook & Son (George)'s chip factory was located at 339 Lafayette Avenue.  The two story structure mentioned in the article is long gone.

1911: Blackwell's Enterprise

Trenton Evening Times, March 5, 1911

Mr. Blackwell's advertisement helps us envision Broad Street Park in the early part of the 20th century when many small farms were prevalent.   Research on Mr. Blackwell revealed that while his farm yard was at 368 Lafayette Avenue, he resided at 92 Lafayette Avenue.  He was a son-in-law of Wesley Gibbs and served as treasurer of the Broad Street Park Civic Association
