The Halloween ticket indicated there would be a grand march.  I wonder if the march was around the neigborhood or just around the building.

1953: Superior Court Rejects Apartments

Hamilton Township Public Library Local History Collection
This is another victory for the BSP Civic Association against the proponents of constructing apartments on the site of the former White City Amusement Park.  Judge Smalley stated, ". . . from all the facts and the inspection of the area, I find the plaintiffs have not shown nor carried the burden of establishing their contention by a preponderence of the evidence".

1953: Apartment Variance Denied

Hamilton Township Public Library Local History Collection
Round one of the attempt to seek approval for the construction of apartments was won by the Broad Street Park Civic Association who opposed the variance.  The alleged hardship was that the parcel of land owned by Mrs. Speciale and her partners was not suitable for single-family homes.  Mrs. Speciale , et al, did not accept the decision of the Township Committee and pursued the matter further.

1953: Zoning Fight

Trenton Evening Times, June 2, 1953

Hamilton Township Public Library Local History Collection
Mrs. Speciale and her co-owners were seeking a variance to build apartments on the land occupied in the early part of the 20th century by the White City Amusement Park on McClellan Avenue from Buchanan Avenue to Sewell Avenue.   Mrs. Speciale's residence at the time was the White City mansion also known as the Casino in the Park's heyday.

1953: BSP Civic Association

Hamilton Township Public Library Local history Collection
The Broad Street Terrace Civic Association is the Broad Street Park Civic Association.  The incorrect name is obviously reporter error.  The BSP Civic Association existed since the early 20th century (see 8/18/09 post) and was reactivated in 1953.  The zoning encroachments mentioned involved a local property owner who was seeking  a variance to construct high density residential development.

1919: Civic Association

Hamilton Township Public Library Local History Collection

It is surmised that the playground mentioned is the Willey School playground considering the PTA involvement.
