Azzaro Brothers Tomato Pies

Received an inquiry from Dominick Azzaro formerly of 1848 South Broad Street.  Dominick wonders how many people remember Azzaro Tomato Pies, Poor Bill's, Sam's Liquor Store, Guhl's 5&10, Popkins Shoes, Erv's Barber Shop and Universal Drum Studio.  Are any of these establishments a part of your memories?

  1. I remember Azzaro's! when i was a teenager my friends and I would take money from my dad's wallet and order cheesesteaks, hoagies and pizza. Nothing to compare where i live now. And, I remember getting shoes at Popkins when i was very little girl (and clothes at Sloshburgs) and then getting to buy a little piece of junk from the 5 and 10. And, the Farmer's Market sort of across Broad Street. And, some little restaurant down the street from Popkins where my mother and i would get a hamburger. My father got his hair cut at Bill's Barber Shop which was on Genessee and Rowan Avenues, i think. And, I remember lots more.

  2. JoeZ - I use to work at Frank's Big and Tall Shop. When working a late night I always ate dinner at Azzaro's. I remember Mike always wearing all white. Had lunch at times at Eddie Williams Deli. I remember Sloshburgs, Nello's Shoe Repair and Popkins Shoes. Was Sam's Liquors next door to Azzaro's? I remember a liquor store there and use to buy a lot from them, family run. And how can you forget Nino's Pizza at the old dinner on Chambers St.

  3. Of course, I remember Popkins, Shlosberg's, Rusling Drug Store (delivered your prescriptions to your door!). Tilton's Bakery... walking to Holy Angels school on Layfatte Ave., smelling the freshly baked goodies....I can still smell them! Also Eddie's Luncheonette.... tomato pies at Azzaro's. Still live in White City by the Mall...lifelong resident.
