Mr. Rake must have been proud driving this beautiful automobile down Schiller Avenue. It must have generated a lot of interest from his neighbors. The Willys-Overlands Motor Company was the second largest producer of automobiles in the United States from 1912 to 1918 after Ford Motor Company. The Willys-Overlands factory was located in Toledo, Ohio.

Rusling Hose Company's Bell

The old fire bells were those the City of Trenton's volunteer fire companies used to summon firefighters. Trenton became a paid fire department on April 4, 1892 and the volunteer companies were disbanded. The Liberty Engine Company was located at 561 North Clinton Avenue and the Lincoln Fire Company was located at 1005 South Clinton Avenue.

It is through articles such as this that we can try to visualize where the various buildings and attractions were located in White City Amusement Park. Other newspaper articles have placed the carousel in the Sewell Avenue end of the park - a right turn after the entrance. The roller coaster, flying swings and the pavilion were located there as shown in available pictures. It is not clear where the carousel could be located in this area. It was reported that the carousel building had large glass windows as seem to appear on the pavilion. In all probability the pavilion housed the carousel. The band stand located on the bluff along the midway most likely sat to the left of the Casino. The other attractions mentioned existed along the midway.

This article brings back memories. I was a member of Troop 67 and Flaming Arrow was my patrol. Troop meetings were held in a one-room building at the end of New Cedar Lane owned by the parish. "Steal the Bacon" was still being played in the late 1950s!

Although this photo isn't of the best quality, it does depict two important areas in the history of Broad Street Park. Hamilton High. lower left, which opened in 1930, occupied land which was once a part of the Pitman Farm. The horse racing oval of Earl Pitman is seen in the upper portion of the photo. The Pitman Farm encompassed many acres and originally extended to South Broad Street.

This railroad station was established to enable area residents to access Broad Street Park prior to the trolley line being extended to Harrison Avenue. People had to cross the meadows to reach the park and station. The station in all probability utilized the line the NJ Transit River Line runs on today south of Rt. 195/Rt.29. A search for a picture of the station has not proved successful to date. The search will continue. Since the station was built for people attending the park, it may have looked something like the illustration below

This picture of the White City Amusement Park roller skating rink and dancing academy was posted on Facebook's "It's a Trenton Thing" by Marge Miccio. The skating rink and dancing academy was one of the largest of its time. A bandstand was located at the southwest end of the building - located at the Buchanan Avenue end of the Park at the end of the midway. The building became the vaudeville theatre in 1908.

Maurice "Mo" Cunningham was a native Iowan and Schiller Avenue neighbor. He was a power-hitting outfielder for the Trenton Giants, a New York Giants farm team from 1946 to 1950, and played at Dunn Field at the Brunswick Circle with Willie Mays. Mo was a good man with a friendly smile and greeting for everyone.

Rusling Pharmacy

This building at 2003 South Broad Street (cor. Buchanan) was the home of Rusling Pharmacy beginning in the 1940s. Of particular historical interest is that the building once housed an A&P market as gleaned from the advertisement below. Information available indicates it was a market from approximately 1928 to 1939. A&P later moved across and down the street to a larger facility at 2110 South Broad.

The two story portion of the building was the residence of the Dyer and Snyder families among others in the early part of the 20th century. The commercial portion in front the housed Evans Bridal Shoppe in 1962 and DeLaraine Jewelers in 1977.

1901 Chambers Street

The building at 1901 Chambers Street at Genesee Street was occupied by Hamilton Body Company in the 1920s and 1930s. Henry, Albert and Arthur Yetter were the proprietors. It became the location of McDermott's Express and Storage in the 1940s prior to again becoming a paint and fender repair shop under the ownership of Flavio Trebbi in 1949.

7. The one-room building at the end of New Cedar Lane where the boy scouts  met.

Schiller Avenue Police Station

This building is located at 531 Schiller Avenue. It was built by Hamilton Township in 1916 as the municipal police headquarters. It was a small cement block building with two small cells in the rear and a small courtroom and officers quarters in the front. The State Department of Institutions and Agencies disapproved this small jail and requested the erection of a new jail. The police department occupied its newly constructed headquarters on Harrison and Lafayette Avenues in 1928.

It was reported that a good-sized crowd gathered to see Alexander Perey's unsuccessful attempts to fly his aeroplane. There are no reports if Mr. Perey ever attempted to fly his airplane again or what happened to him or his aircraft. Information does exist regarding his nephew Charles Perey, Jr. Young Mr. Perey enlisted in the army in 1918 and was assigned to Fort Slocum, Kelly Field, where he received instruction in the School of Aeronautics. By 1919 he attained the rank of lieutenant in the Air Service, U.S. Army. He wed Elizabeth D. Stewart of 515 Lalor Street on June 10 and began a painting and paperhanging business from is home at 2416 South Clinton Avenue in 1920.

Sylvia G. McMahon of 401 Schiller Avenue, spouse of Francis X. McMahon, was a highly acclaimed songwriter and poet. Among her published songs were: "Little Purple Pansy", "Clover Blossom", "When Hearts are Happy, Home is Paradise" and "All My Love I Gave To You". She was a nurse, a charter member of Holy Angels Church, where she was the first president of the Altar and Rosary Society, and a charter member of the Rowan-Willey PTA. Her son Moses McMahon and grandson Rodger McMahon both served as Chief of Rusling Hose Company.

The potato chip originated at Moon's Lake House, a hotel in Saratoga Springs NY in 1853. They were served to diners and guests who loved them. First known as Saratoga Chips, their popularity spread throughout the country and were served with meals as a vegetable. They didn't become a snack food until 1925. Pearson Cook & Son (George)'s chip factory was located at 339 Lafayette Avenue. The two story structure mentioned in the article is long gone.

Early inhabitants of the of the White City Park area were the people who referred to themselves as the Lenni Lenape. These people are often referred to as the Delaware Indians. They had an amicable relationship with the first Quaker settlers but friction developed and by 1800 the Indians had disappeared from the area.

This is the second picture of wooden steps associated with the amusement park that I have seen. The other is in the Hamilton Township Public Library Local History Collection. The Collection picture shows one set of wooden steps extending from the bottom to the top of the bluff. This picture shows two sets of steps. The steps in this picture could be the precursor to the concrete steps which still exist today or they may have been steps to access the lake from the Buchanan Avenue end of the Park. I believe the latter is most reasonable.

Mrs. Yates lived two doors down from us on Reed Avenue. I remember when I was a child she would give me little loaves of bread with the slices approximately one and a half to two inches square. I thought they were cool.

The Watson House is the headquarters of the New Jersey State Society of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). It was restored by the DAR as part of the New Jersey Tercentenary Celebration in 1964. The Watson House is open to the public for docent-guided tours each spring and fall from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM on the second Sunday of April, May, June, September, October and November. It is located at 151 Westcott Avenue.

This is another report on the concept of creating a drive along the bluff overlooking the marshes and lakes of what today is John A. Roebling Memorial Park. The previously posted article said Overlook Avenue would extend to Trenton. From this article we learn that it would begin and end at the foot of Deutz Avenue in Hamilton. Plans change and we know that Overlook Avenue doesn't exist as an avenue from Trenton to White Horse. The Broad Street Land Association had planned to have Overlook Avenue run the length of their land along the bluff (See the 6/25/09 post [Development Label], 1889: Plan for Broad Street Park).

This is a phtograph of White City (Spring) Lake taken this year. It is taken from the bluff behind the Abbott Overlook Mansion and shows the access area at the foot of the entrance road from Sewell Avenue.

Movie Theater?

Following a presentation on White City Park given by Tom Glover at Kuser Farm Mansion a couple of years ago, someone stated that this building at 209 Harrison Avenue was a movie theater at one time. Unfortunately, contact information for that person was not obtained. Note that the building has extensive depth which would lend itself to being a movie theater. Extensive searching for verification has not proven fruitful.. Information anyone?

Members of Rusling Hose Company in Broad Street park are conducting first aid classes in Fire District No. 3 of Hamilton Township at no cost to the taxpayers. Through the medium of roller skating parties in White City Rink, the volunteer firemen are raising funds to defray the expense of purchasing necessary materials. On Tuesday, March 24, the second in a series of skating parties will be held at the rink with petite Rose Mary Lieberman as one of the feature attractions. Firemen shown with her, all of whom are experienced first aid instructors, are Jesse Everett, Sinclair Stratton, Lambert Rockefeller, Jesse T. Pointon, Fred Brenner, Vernon Jones, John Smedley, and Theodore McCoy. Dr. James T. Dodge is director of the first aid course , with other aides including Mrs. Katherine Kent, Mrs. Virginia Bozarth, Miss Margaret Larison and John VanSant.

Rose Mary Lieberman is the daughter of Hamilton Township Committeeman and Mrs. Harry Lieberman.

The Church held services in the building pictured at 547 Schiller Avenue. It was originally built as the Rusling School and was the headquarters for Rusling Hose Company. Services were held in the mid 1930s and the Church purchased the property in 1938.

The Company was organized in 1896, not 1886 as stated in the article. The original firehouse bell hangs today in the fire station at Chambers and Rennie Streets. Mr Lambert Rockafellow lived across the street from me in the days of my youth. I never had the honor of meeting any of his contemporaries.
